With a tool like this, there is always a possibility of data loss, so I am weary about making a public release until it has been well tested. If you would like to participate in beta testing, post here! Please answer the following questions:

• What Macintosh do you have?
• What Zip or Jaz drive do you have?
• How technically savvy are you?
• Are you aware and prepared for the possibility of catastrophic data loss?

Hey there. Would love to help beta test. I have Macs from the 128k up through the Plus and Classic and the entire power PPC series. Plus Amiga 500 and various Apple II and GS scsi cards. I have three of the blue zip 100 scsi drives as well as two zip 100 plus drives. Also have a SyJet but that doesn't count.

I've been told I'm fairly tech savvy. Lol.
And yes fully aware of data loss and half expect it.

This is a fantastic project!

Good news, so far!

The 0.1-beta-nov27 release runs under Mac OS 9.2.1 on my Power Macintosh G3.

A couple of initial observations:

• TIP does not like DOS formatted Zip disks, reformatting as Mac makes a world of difference
• Although Jaz drives appear in the Command Console (and can be interacted with), the media is not recognized in TIP itself

I have additional details (plus a few screenshots to share), but will post those after I’m finished running more tests.

Does TIP work with USB drives on the Mac? I also have a Zip 100 USB that I can try on that same machine. The G3 has an Orange Micro OrangeLink+ USB/FireWire combo card for such things. There’s also an internal Zip drive on the G3, which is PCI.

@splorp: I have no idea. My TIP code works exclusively with the SCSI Manager. If Mac OS has something that allows it to redirect such requests to USB automatically, then it would work. But my app has no specific knowledge of USB or PCI.

I was making an assumption that TIP was having difficulty reading the DOS formatted disk. You’re likely correct in saying that Mac OS is getting in the way. There were literally hundreds of hard and soft errors within a couple minutes of starting the test, along with “click of death”-like sounds.

That is very unexpected. I would think that Mac OS and TIP trying to access the drive simultaneously would lead to command errors or data corruption, but it seems odd that it would cause physical errors on the drive itself. I may have to see if I can reproduce this somehow.

Ok, it seems like that particular cartridge has a lot of inherent media issues. And not just because it was originally formatted as DOS.

I was able to replicate roughly the same number of hard and soft errors (over 60) using both the external and internal Zip drives on the G3. Another Zip disk I tested repeatedly, reported only minimal errors (1-3) in both drives.

I would like to try formatting another (hopefully better) Zip disk as DOS and running TIP again, just to confirm.

Maybe this functionality is provided by the Iomega drivers, not Mac OS. Can you run a tool like SCSI Probe and see if the USB Zip shows up?

@splorp: You can read the document "No Drives" in the "tip-docs" folder for more info about compatibility, at least on the Windows side of things (which may or may not map perfectly to this Mac port)

According to the Apple System Profiler, the internal Zip drive is not PCI or ATAPI.

It is SCSI (ID 5) along with the boot drive.

Yes, Mac OS recognizes the USB drive and disks mount as expected. In fact, I can dismount the volume using the tester interface, but that is all. Note that the USB drive appears in the Silverlining screenshot above, as well.

Also, the USB drive shows up in utilities such as Silverlining Pro, but as a USB device, not SCSI. The USB/FireWire card I’m using is plugged into one of the PCI slots.

• What Macintosh model you have (e.g. PowerBook 3400c)
• What System version you are running (e.g. System 7.0.1)
• What Iomega drive you have (e.g. Iomega Zip 100 Plus Ext. SCSI)
• What drive firmware is reported in the SCSI list (e.g. J.05)

Then, download the compiled binaries (iomega_tester_v0.1.sit.hqx) from the releases page and take it for a spin! Then report back with your findings. Thank you!

@marciot For your compatibility grid, you can add that the internal Zip 100 drive on the G3 works as well.

Also, the amount of memory in my machine is 256MB.

As predicted, the Zip 100 USB drive is not recognized by the tester.

@splorp: I read somewhere about Apple using ATAPI drives on Rev. 2 boards. I assume that means the motherboard. Maybe system profiler can confirm you have a Rev. 1, which would also explain why you had an internal SCSI Zip drive. You could also confirm this by looking inside your Mac and seeing what ribbon cable the Zip is on, but I assume you prefer not to do that.

I’ll try connecting that drive to another Mac which has native USB on the motherboard and see if TIP sees the drive then.

@marciot The internal Zip drive shares the same SCSI ribbon cable as the startup drive. System Profiler doesn’t show any information specific to the what revision of the motherboard is used.

Ahh Thankyou. I was slammed with stuff and finally able to get to testing this out. Also now have the Molar Mac up on the bench with the scsi zip drive in it. Usually they host the ide variant but mine due to how I needed to set thigs up has a scsi internal zip100 and a scsi plus 100 Epson on the external. Looking forward to teating this out. Finally. I’m sorry that I’ve been so busy lately and haven’t had any time to do further testing since the last release …

I'm trying to test the Feb 13 beta on my Mac Plus running System 6.0.8 with an HFS SCSI hard drive. I expanded the archive with StuffIt Expander 4.0.1 and it created a directory "Iomega Tester" with the "Iomega Tester" application and a directory "tip-doc" inside of it. "tip-doc" has a bunch of files in it, namely "Instructions".

When I run Iomega Tester, I get a console-looking window that says "Starting tip ..." and the main "Trouble In Paradise" window on top of it. When I click "Next >", I get an error "Can't find the "Instructions" file. Make sure it is inside the "tip-doc" folder."

There is also no image in the large vertical rectangle in the main TIP window.

@jcs: I pretty much only expect this to work under System 7.0.1. That said, if you ignore the error and simply read the indicated files using a text editor, you may still be able to use it under System 6. You likely won't get the formatting of the text files, however.

Hi there, I would love to try this out on my Mac! I know you wrote that this is for SCSI zip drives, but is there a possibility of it working with IDE drives?

• I have a Power Macintosh G3 beige desktop, running Mac OS 9 (can't remember the exact version off the top of my head)
• Internal IDE Apple-branded ZIP100 drive
• Fairly experienced with tech, I would say
• Data loss is fine, I don't keep anything important on this machine and all my ZIP disks are blank

Hi @applepines101, although I appreciate your interest, I believe there are several obstacles to making this work with IDE.

• Lack of Apple developer documentation regarding the IDE interface
• Lack of documentation for the Iomega Zip API for IDE devices
• Steve Gibson himself never wrote an IDE version of his tool and IIRC, his documentation suggested that the Iomega API did not allow for such low-level access

Even without these obstacles, revamping this tool to work with IDE would be an enormous undertaking, if not a complete rewrite.

Well, technically yes, but I am no longer actively developing it. Seems like with so many inexpensive SCSI emulators out there, using Zip drives is much less useful than it used to be.

Though 'graduating' to several Ra/PiSCSIs and a BlueSCSI for super large storage, I still use zip disks like crazy, as it's still a great way to share files between Macs very quickly and easily! Is the beta 4 good enough to be a release v1.0 ?
