The lab keeps operating-system media, drivers, ROMs, keys, and generated images out of Git. This page records the sources and hashes used for the first Windows XP run so the setup can be rebuilt without guessing which download was meant.
Supply a legitimate Windows XP Professional 32-bit disc image locally. No Windows ISO is downloaded or stored by this project.
If the source is older than SP3, use Microsoft's standalone English x86 SP3 package, WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe. The Microsoft Update Catalog entry for KB936929 identifies the package. Its SHA-1 is also part of the original Microsoft download filename.

The product key remains a local user input.
Use ASUS's archived P5K package, Intel_INF_V8301013_2kxpvista.zip.

The package covers QEMU q35's P35-compatible host bridge at 8086:29c0 and the ICH9 system devices used by the probe machine.
Use HP SoftPaq sp38101.exe. HP published it for its xw4600, xw6600, and xw8600 workstations in December 2007. The package contains Intel's original 32-bit F6 floppy image.

The extracted iaAHCI.inf and TXTSETUP.OEM both cover the probe machine's ICH9 AHCI controller at 8086:2922.
Use NVIDIA's 169.21_forceware_winxp_32bit_english_whql.exe. The NVIDIA release page lists Windows XP 32-bit, a 19 December 2007 release date, and GeForce 8800 GTX support.

The local candidate comes from a ComputerBase collection posted in April 2008. A TechPowerUp entry for VBIOS 60.80.06.00.18 independently lists the same ASUS board identity and subsystem ID 1043:8233, but its binary has not yet been compared with the local file.
The ComputerBase attachment is ASUS.8800GTX.PCIe.768MB.Rev.01.zip.

The local copy has the 55 aa option-ROM signature, a declared size of 55,808 bytes, PCIR identity 10de:0191, subsystem bytes for 1043:8233, and the embedded version 60.80.06.00.18. Its full-image byte sum is 0x50, not zero, so it does not pass the legacy option-ROM checksum. QEMU maps it without rejecting it, which makes it useful for ROM BAR and driver-read probes. It is not trusted for firmware execution or frozen board identity. A manual TechPowerUp download would give us the best independent binary comparison.
BOOT0 and ENABLE are not supplied by either archive. They still need a real-card capture or another trustworthy hardware source before they can be frozen as board values.
Put the chipset, storage, and ForceWare packages in private/archive/ with the filenames shown above. Add the SP3 updater when the XP source needs it, and add the VBIOS ZIP when testing that candidate. Then run:
./experiments/0001-qemu-xp-baseline/prepare-private-media.shThe script verifies every available package hash, extracts the 2007 F6 floppy image, and builds a local driver disc containing the chipset package, storage files, ForceWare installer, and optional SP3 updater. Its outputs stay under private/prepared/ and remain ignored by Git.
Copy experiments/0001-qemu-xp-baseline/media.example.env to private/qemu-xp.env, then point it at the legitimate XP ISO and the generated private images.
- Install Windows XP from the user-supplied media.
- If the disk is attached through ICH9 AHCI, load the Intel 7.8.0.1012 F6 driver during text-mode setup.
- If the source is older than SP3, run the standalone SP3 updater from the generated driver disc and reboot.
- Install the Intel chipset package from the generated driver disc.
- Reboot and record Device Manager before installing a display driver.
- Install ForceWare 169.21 only after the G80 device reaches the driver-install gate.
- Keep the machine offline unless a later experiment gives it a specific network task.
