Traditional recommendation systems often rely solely on user-item interaction data or textual descriptions. This work introduces a novel approach that leverages multimodal language models to process both product images and textual information, leading to more accurate and contextually aware product recommendations.
MM-GPT2Rec achieves 83.3% Hit Rate compared to ~45.6% for multimodal baselines and significantly outperforms traditional methods (Content-Based: 8.0%, Matrix Factorization: 9.3%, Collaborative Filtering: 1.1%).

We evaluated our approach on a subset of the Amazon Product dataset Download data here, a public collection of Amazon product reviews and metadata. Specifically, we selected multiple categories (Appliances, Digital Music, Gift Cards, Health and Personal Care) to ensure diversity and generalizability.
The system is designed to work with Amazon product review and metadata data. The data processing pipeline handles:
- Review Data: User reviews, ratings, and timestamps
- Product Metadata: Titles, descriptions, categories, and image URLs
- Image Processing: Automatic download and preprocessing of product images
