For CIS Compliance Script checks for a tenancy's configuration against the CIS OCI Foundations Benchmark use one of the provided scripts.
The CIS Compliance Script cis_report.py has been awarded CIS Security Software Certification for CIS Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Foundations Benchmark v3.0.0.
In addition to CIS checks they can check for alignment to OCI Best Practices (see OCI Best Practice Summary Report). These checks include reviews for the following OCI best practices in your tenancy:
- Aggregation of OCI Audit compartment logs, Network Flow logs, and Object Storage logs are sent to Service Connector Hub in all regions
- A Budget for cost track is created in your tenancy
- Network connectivity to on-premises is redundant
- Cloud Guard is configured at the root compartment with detectors and responders
- Certificates close to expiration
The scripts are located under the scripts folder in this repository. They output a summary report CSV as well individual CSV findings report for configuration issues that are discovered in a folder (default location) with the region, tenancy name, and current day's date, for example <tenancy_name>-2022-12-02_13-50-30/.
The Auditors Group that is created as part of the CIS Landing Zone Terraform has all the permissions required to run the compliance checking in the tenancy. Below is the minimum OCI IAM Policy to grant a group the script in a tenancy.
Access to audit retention requires the user to be part of the Administrators group - the only recommendation affected is CIS recommendation 3.1.
For tenancies without IAM Domains you must substitute 'Default'/'Auditor-Group' with Auditor-Group.
allow group 'Default'/'Auditor-Group' to inspect all-resources in tenancy
allow group 'Default'/'Auditor-Group' to read instances in tenancy
allow group 'Default'/'Auditor-Group' to read load-balancers in tenancy

To download and run the scripts without cloning the repository:
mkdir cis_compliance_script
cd cis_compliance_script
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/oci-landing-zones/oci-cis-landingzone-quickstart/main/scripts/cis_reports.py
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/oci-landing-zones/oci-cis-landingzone-quickstart/main/scripts/standard.sh
chmod +x standard.shOn MacOS use:
mkdir cis_compliance_script
cd cis_compliance_script
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/oci-landing-zones/oci-cis-landingzone-quickstart/main/scripts/cis_reports.py --output cis_reports.py
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/oci-landing-zones/oci-cis-landingzone-quickstart/main/scripts/standard.sh --output standard.sh
chmod +x standard.shOptionally, download requirements.txt. When it is not present, standard.sh creates it before installing the required Python packages.
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/oci-landing-zones/oci-cis-landingzone-quickstart/main/scripts/requirements.txtOn MacOS use:
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/oci-landing-zones/oci-cis-landingzone-quickstart/main/scripts/requirements.txt --output requirements.txtWhen Internet access is available, standard.sh creates a Python virtual environment and installs all packages listed in scripts/requirements.txt.
The required packages are pytz, oci, and requests; they are needed to run the compliance checks. The requirements.txt file also includes the optional packages xlsxwriter, matplotlib, and numpy, which enable XLSX output and dashboard graphics.
Standard.sh supports the following arguments:
-h -- This message.
-ip -- Use instance principal for authentication.
-st -- Use OCI security token for authentication.
-cf -- OCI config file (defaults to '$HOME/.oci/config')
-o|--output-dir output_parent -- Use the speficied directory as parent directory for output directoires.
-r|--region region_name -- Run assess.sh on region region_name only.
-t|--tenancy tenancy_configuration -- Specify a name of the tenancy (defaults to 'DEFAULT').
--redact -- Redact sensitive information in output files.
--zip-protect -- Encrypt ZIP file with a password of your choice.
--no-checksum -- Do not create checksum files.
--no-zip -- Do not create a ZIP file for the contents of the output directory.
--cis options -- Pass additional options to cis_reports.py.
-v|--version -- Show the version numbers of the scripts used.
--verbose -- Print more details.
Use --cis to pass quoted options to cis_reports.py. For example, to skip the OCI API usage check:
./standard.sh --cis '--disable-api-usage-check'For the complete list of available options, see The script cis_report.py and the Usage Examples sections. The -dt, -ip, -st, -t, and -r options are detected by standard.sh and do not need to be passed through --cis.
Advanced users can use the script cis_report.py directly. The next chapters explain the details.

The CIS Compliance Script loops through all regions used by the tenancy and all resource types referenced in the CIS OCI Foundations Benchmark and outputs a summary compliance report. Each report row corresponds to a recommendation in the OCI Foundations Benchmark and identifies if the tenancy is in compliance as well as the number of offending findings. The report summary columns read as:
- Num: the recommendation number in the CIS Benchmark document.
- Level: the recommendation level. Level 1 recommendations are less restrictive than Level 2.
- Compliant: whether the tenancy is in compliance with the recommendation.
- Findings: the number of offending findings for the recommendation.
- Total: Total number of that resources
- Title: the recommendation description.
In the sample output below, we see the tenancy is not compliant with several recommendations. Among those is item 1.7 where the output shows 33 users do not have MFA enabled for accessing OCI Console.
For each non-compliant report item, a file with findings details is generated, as shown in the last part of the output:

Back to our example, by looking at cis_Identity and Access Management_1.7.csv file, the output shows the 33 users who do not have MFA enabled for accessing OCI Console. The script only identifies compliance gaps. It does not remediate the findings. Administrator action is required to address this compliance gap.
Using --print-to-screen False will only print non-compliant findings to the screen. For standard.sh use --cis '--print-to-screen False'.
In the sample output below:
Using --level 1 will only print Level 1 findings. For standard.sh use --cis '--level 1'.
In the sample output below:
Using --obp will check for a tenancy's alignment to the available OCI Best Practices. For standard.sh use --cis '--obp'.
The Service_Limits OBP-GOV-1 result is collected only when using --service-limits, which also enables --all-resources, --obp, and --raw.
