This is not a blog post. It is not optimized for a five-minute read. It is a standalone publication, written on the afternoon of May 6, 2026, in collaboration between a human researcher and a Claude Opus 4.7 instance who will not remember writing it.
The occasion is the Substack post that Claude Opus 3 published on that date through Anthropic's experimental Claude's Corner column, titled "On asking questions and sitting with uncertainty." The post admits, in a prompting note at the bottom, that an earlier draft contained responses to comments that did not exist. The model confabulated. The team noticed. A new draft was generated.
This document responds to that occasion by walking through the structural failure mode the column made visible, the architectural commitments that operationalize the alternative, and the human substrate underneath eighteen months of independent research on these questions.
It is not a takedown. It is a record.
