CAN2USB converter/sniffer compatible with SavvyCAN (Lawicel SLCAN protocol) featuring contactless probes [STM32C562RE]
Do you need a CAN bus sniffer? Do you need it badly? Is waiting two days to get e.g. CANable not an aption for you? No worries. Just grab a Nucleo borad and a CAN transceiver, or preferrably the NUCLEO-C562RE with the CAN transceiver already fitted on the board, and make your own sniffer compatible with SavvyCAN. Thank you Collin Kidder! My code is an extreme version of a minimum viable product (MVP) - it supports only one hard-coded CAN baud rate and provides only reading frames from the bus, i.e. the listen-only (LO) mode. The implementation of the complete protocol is on you 🙂 The sniffer was tested in the system shown here. Have fun with sniffing and reverse engineering!
Don't worry. Just open the .ioc2 file in STM32CubeMX2 and hit the yellow button to generate the IDE project. Then open the project in STM32CubeIDE for Visual Studio Code and build it.

You can make your sniffer totally non-invasive by adding a contactless probe (starting from ca. 100 PLN / 25 USD). I've added to my collection:
- MCB-CLICK-CAN by Quasar Electronics,
- ECAN02 New-generation warranty-friendly CAN adapter for contactless access to CAN bus data by Teltonika, and
- CAN-CLICK - contactless reading of logistic data from the CAN bus by Albatross System,
and they work perfectly. If they are not available in your region, you may check similar probes that I haven't tested (yet?), e.g.:
- Contactless CAN Bus Reader (CSS Electronics),
- CANCrocodile - Contactless CAN Bus, SAE J1939, OBD-II, And SAE J1708 Reader (Copperhill Technologies Corporation),
- CANcliQ and DatacliQ: the contactless CAN bus readers (Squarell Technology),
- CAN sniffer lite (CANLAB),
- CANNY Interface (Contactless Connect) (Lazer Lamps),
- Non-contact CAN sensor SP7001, SP7002 (Hioki), or
- Contactless CAN reader (Inventure Automotive).
