Botryllus schlosseri Nickel Toxicity

Background

B. schlosseri is a cosmopolitain marine tunicate that undergoes weekly blasotgeneis, a form of asexual budding. Simple Blastogenic Stage Schematic

Nickel toxicity has never been characterized in B. schlosseri. Here we perform several experments evaluating nickel impacts on the transcriptomic and proteomic profiles of this marine tunicate. We also establish the LC50 of this species.

Objectives

a) Determine nickel LC50 for B. schlosseri in full strength artifical seawater.

b) Evaluate the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) activity response of B. schlosseri in response to nickel.

c) Evaluate the impact of nickel on expression of genes relating to oxidative stress, senescence, stemness, and apoptosis.
